Charity Fund Distribution
The Club Cruceros Charity Committee vets local charities and brings recommendations to the Board of Directors. Each year the Club finds a wide variety of ways in which to help. Each month, each season, brings new opportunities to lend a helping hand, and the club rises to the occasion, time and again.
2022-2023 Season
The Charity Committee is excited to report that this year Club Cruceros was able to assist eight different charities with funds raised through various club events.
Thanks to the hard work of many volunteer hands and the generosity of our membership we distributed a whopping $135,000 MX. Our new application process brought in 10 applications by the deadline date of February 15. By early March the committee got busy vetting the organizations and determining how we could make the biggest impact with the funds raised by the club. The following is a list of those we selected and what they plan to do with the help we provided.
1. Mamá Benita's $18,000 MX
This facility is a shelter that houses and feeds women and their children who are escaping domestic violence, they also provide services for elderly and terminally ill people who have no family or shelter. The facility was badly in need of repair, so we purchased construction materials and organized a work day to improve the building.
2. Mexico Marine Wildlife Rescue Center $12,100 MX
This organization is first in line when it comes to marine wildlife rescue operations in the waters surrounding the Baja Peninsula. They used the funds to purchase replacement equipment to run their facility and restock commonly used medications for the animals.
3. School Uniforms for Impoverished Children $18,000 MX
In order for children to attend school in Mexico it is necessary for them to wear school uniforms which must be purchased by the family. Unforms cost roughly $5,000 MX, a price that is cost-prohibitive to many low-income families. The purchase of these uniforms provides access to education that otherwise may not be available to the children we assisted.
4. Assistance in completing construction of La Esperanza school in outer La Paz $36,000 MX
This school, located in an isolated area of outer La Paz, has been under construction for the last several years and needed a boost to get it completed. Schools in remote areas are invaluable to providing education to rural communities.
5. Pro Paramedicos for Maintenance of Two Loaner Ambulances $10,000 MX
This organization began during the height of the pandemic, assisting paramedics with badly needed supplies. The all-volunteer paramedic staff relies on donations to keep them operating. Most outlying communities surrounding La Paz have only one ambulance and when that ambulance is out of service that community has no service. Pro Paramedicos owns two ambulances that they loan to communities when their own vehicle is out of service. The funds distributed will help to maintain the loaner ambulances.
6. Voces de Niños Sponsor One Family for a Year $23,400 MX
When a child in Mexico suffers from speech impairments, the cost of assistance is completely shouldered by the family, a burden which is often too much for families to bear and therefore those children never receive the help they need. The funds distributed will provide a full year of professional speech therapy for one child.
7. Voluntarias Vicentinas Centro #2 $5,000 MX
This organization assists elderly, disabled, and terminally ill people with meals, medicine, and medical supplies. They provide home visits, offer rides to doctor appointments, and sit with them if they are hospitalized. They will use the funds to help pay for medicine, medical supplies, and food.
The Charity Committee is proud of the fact that we have been able to accomplish all these things thanks to the generosity of the club members and friends who attended and contributed to the fundraising events of the 2022/2023 season. We look forward to next season and hope to be able to continue to assist worthy causes through the generosity of our membership. Watch for presentations by these and other organizations in the fall. We plan to put together a calendar of events that everyone will be able to attend and enjoy.
